The biggest decision on your frontage

Nothing else at the front of a property is this large, this visible, or this permanent. Get it wrong and it undercuts everything behind it — the render, the landscaping, the cars in the drive. Get it right and the whole address lifts. The Portland double is built to be the deciding piece: substantial, square-section, quietly architectural, with a presence that reads as considered rather than expensive. It is the difference between a house that people drive past and a home that makes them slow down.

The whole front of the property becomes yours

A driveway is the widest opening in the boundary, and usually the one that gives everything away — the cars, the kids, the front yard, the whole of the house behind it. The Portland closes that off properly. Uprights set just 10mm apart make the lower half read as solid from the road: private at eye level, no line of sight in, while air and light still move through so it never becomes a wall. Above the upper rail, a 200mm open band keeps the sky in the picture. The front of the property stops being on display and starts being part of the home.

Considered down to the millimetre

Square 65 × 65 RHS gate sides. Square 40 × 40 RHS top and bottom rails, with 38 × 25 RHS intermediate rails carrying the open band across the top. Slim 50 × 10 RHS uprights, spaced an even 10mm apart and set out so the rhythm holds true across both leaves — the spacing reads continuously from one side of the driveway to the other, and the open squares above line up leaf to leaf. Welded from premium galvanised Australian steel. No scrollwork, no finials, no flourish added to distract from a thin frame. Restraint like this is only available to people who can build properly. Everything else has to be decorated.

Heavy-duty ball bearing hinges, included

Hardware is where an expensive-looking gate gives itself away, usually inside the first year — and on a pair of leaves this size, there is nowhere for a weak hinge to hide. So every Portland double is supplied with heavy-duty ball bearing hinges, top and bottom on each leaf. Sealed 180° bearings carry the load instead of grinding against it, rated well beyond the weight of the gate, so both leaves swing smooth and effortless and never drop or drag. Every hinge is fully adjustable on a threaded stem, so the installer can dial each leaf square on its post and close the centre gap to a clean, even line — then leave it set. It matters more again if you automate: an opener only ever performs as well as the hinges underneath it. Zinc plated for the weather. Included in the price, not an upsell.
