An open driveway is the weak point in a good front boundary

You can get the fence line right, the garden right and the front of the house exactly right, and still leave a car-width hole in the middle of it. That gap is where the dog gets out, where the kids' ball goes, where anyone can simply walk in off the footpath, and where the whole frontage stops reading as one thing. The Berkley Double Gate closes it properly — two matched leaves that swing across the opening and finish the boundary the way it was drawn.

It should feel heavy when you open it

A gate tells you what it is in the first second you touch it. Light gates rattle, sag on their hinges and drift out of line until the leaves no longer meet in the middle. The Berkley is welded by hand from premium Australian galvanised steel, with square steel gate sides and full-width rails carrying the load rather than the fixings, so each leaf holds its shape, swings true and closes on the same line in ten years as it does on the day it goes up.

Melrose spears — the detail that dates it correctly

The spear is what separates a heritage gate from a row of pipes. Every Berkley upright is finished with a Melrose spear, alternating tall and short across both leaves — the pointed detail that reads instantly as period, catches the light along the top of the opening, and gives the entrance a rhythm you notice from the street. It's also quietly practical: a spear top is not a comfortable thing to climb over.

Security you can still see the house through

A solid gate hides the very thing you've spent years getting right, and turns the driveway into a blind spot. Fine round uprights, evenly spaced, do the opposite: the garden, the verandah and the front of the house stay part of the streetscape, while the opening is genuinely closed. You keep the view, the light and the sense of arrival — and still know where the boundary is.

Run Berkley panels along the frontage and carry the same detail through the gates, and the whole property arrives at the street as one considered thing.

The gates are the part of a boundary people actually touch. They're the thing that swings open when visitors arrive, the thing that closes behind the car at night, and the first detail anyone reads from the footpath. That's why they should be the heaviest, best-made part of the whole run — not the lightest.

The Berkley isn't the cheapest way to close a driveway, and it was never meant to be. Don't forget the posts

A double gate is only ever as good as what it hangs on. For the Berkley Double Gate we recommend a minimum 65 × 65 mm post, concreted properly, and we supply a full range of matching posts, caps, hinges, locks, drop bolts and automation hardware so the whole entrance finishes in one colour and one finish rather than looking like it was assembled from two suppliers. Complementary post caps are included for the gate stiles.
