The one thing a period home usually gets wrong

You can restore the verandah, find the right tessellated tiles and get the colours exactly right — and still have the front of the house let down by whatever fence came with it. A Colorbond panel or a flat aluminium slat fence undoes a hundred years of detail in a single line across the boundary. The Berkley is the fence a Federation, Edwardian or Victorian home was always drawn with: fine round uprights, a spear along the top, and enough air between them to see the garden the house sits in. It doesn't fight the architecture. It finishes it.

Melrose spears — the detail that dates it correctly

The spear is what separates a heritage fence from a row of pipes. Every Berkley upright is finished with a Melrose spear — the pointed detail that reads instantly as period, catches the light along the top of the run, and gives the boundary a rhythm you notice from the footpath. It's also quietly practical: a spear top is not a comfortable thing to climb over.

Round uprights, spaced to be looked through

16mm round uprights, set at an 88mm gap, carried on 38 × 25 RHS rails. Round is the point — a period fence was never made of flat slats, and the difference is obvious the moment you stand in front of one. The spacing is drawn to be seen through rather than hidden behind, so the garden, the verandah and the front of the house all stay part of the streetscape.

Made for old houses, where nothing is ever square

Heritage frontages are rarely the length a catalogue expects — there's a corner, a driveway crossover, a boundary that isn't quite straight. Every Berkley panel can be trimmed down on site to suit the space it's going into, so the run finishes properly at both ends. Each panel arrives with four brackets and screws, powder coated to match the panel colour, so the fixings disappear into the fence instead of announcing themselves.

A heritage home tells you what it wants. It wants the fine vertical line, the spear along the top, the shadow that a round section throws and a flat one never does. It wants a boundary you can see the garden through. The Berkley is drawn to that brief and built in steel heavy enough to hold it — welded and finished, not clipped together out of a flat pack.

It isn't the cheapest way to fence a frontage, and it was never meant to be. An aluminium or Colorbond fence is a purchase — replaced when it dents, fades or blows out of line, and the second one costs what the first one did. A Berkley run is installed once. Spread across the decades it will stand there, it is one of the least expensive things you will do to the front of a house that has already stood for a century.

Don't forget the posts

The brackets and screws come with every panel, colour coded to match. What the run still needs from you is posts: we recommend a minimum 50 × 50 mm post, and we supply a full range of matching posts and caps so the whole fence line finishes in one colour and one finish.
