The smallest gate gets used the most

The pedestrian gate is opened every day — by you, the kids, visitors, deliveries. It's the part of the boundary people put their hand on, and the detail they see from a metre away rather than from the car. A flimsy gate announces itself immediately: it rattles, it drags, it swings back on its own. The Berkley closes with weight behind it, and reads as part of the house rather than something clipped on afterwards.

Melrose spears — the detail that dates it correctly

The spear is what separates a heritage gate from a row of pipes. Every Berkley upright is finished with a Melrose spear, alternating tall and short across the gate — the pointed detail that reads instantly as period, catches the light at the front path, and carries the same rhythm as the fence line either side of it. It's also quietly practical: a spear top is not a comfortable thing to climb over.

It stays square, so it keeps latching

Most gate problems are the same problem: the frame has racked out of square, so the latch no longer lines up and the gate catches on the ground. The Berkley is welded from premium Australian galvanised steel with substantial gate sides and full-width rails, so the frame carries the load rather than the fixings. It hangs true, latches first time, and does the same thing in ten years as it does on the day it goes up.

Closed to the street, open to the garden

A solid gate at the front path turns the entrance into a blind wall and hides the very thing you've spent years getting right. Fine round uprights, evenly spaced, keep the dog in and the footpath out while leaving the garden, the verandah and the front door part of the streetscape. People can see where they're going. You can see who's coming.

A boundary reads as one thing or it reads as a compromise. Made to your opening in the same sections, spacing and spear rhythm as the Berkley fence panels and double gates, the single gate lets the front path, the frontage and the driveway all speak the same language — so the property arrives at the street composed and deliberate rather than assembled from whatever was available.

A heritage home tells you what it wants at the front path. It wants the fine vertical line, the spear along the top, the shadow that a round section throws and a flat one never does, and a gate you can see the garden through. The Berkley is drawn to that brief and built in steel heavy enough to hold it — welded and finished, not clipped together out of a flat pack.

It isn't the cheapest way to close a front path, and it was never meant to be. A light imported gate is a purchase — replaced when it sags, dents or stops latching, and the second one costs what the first one did, plus the hardware and the labour again. A Berkley is hung once. Spread across the decades it will stand there, it is one of the least expensive things you will do to the front of your home.

Don't forget the posts

A gate is only ever as good as what it hangs on. For the Berkley Single Gate we recommend a minimum 65 × 65 mm post, concreted properly, and we supply a full range of matching posts, caps, hinges and latches so the whole entrance finishes in one colour and one finish rather than looking like it was assembled from two suppliers. Complementary post caps are included for the gate sides.
