A home isn't finished the day the builders leave. It's finished the day the right gate goes up at the front of the path. Until then something at the entrance keeps letting the rest of the house down — a temporary panel, a builder's default, a gap where a decision should be. The Portland closes it. Substantial, square-section, quietly architectural. And everything behind it — the render, the landscaping, the front door you spent weeks choosing — finally reads as one deliberate piece of work rather than a series of separate expenses.

The front garden becomes a room you actually use

Most front gardens are decoration. They're mown, paid for and looked at — and nobody sits in them, because the whole space is on display to the street. The Portland changes what that space is for. Slats set just 10mm apart make the lower half read as solid from the footpath: private at eye level, no line of sight in, while air and light still move through so it never becomes a wall. Above the upper rail, a 200mm open band keeps the sky in the picture. What you get back is a front yard that belongs to the house instead of the street — kids out the front, coffee on the step, the dog left out without a second thought.

Considered down to the millimetre

Square 65 × 65 RHS gate sides. Square 40 × 40 RHS top and bottom rails. Slim 50 × 10 RHS vertical slats, spaced an even 10mm apart and set out so the rhythm holds true across the full width — no half-slat at the end, no gap that drifts. Welded from premium galvanised Australian steel. No scrollwork, no finials, no flourish added to distract from a thin frame. Restraint like this is only available to people who can build properly. Everything else has to be decorated.

Heavy-duty ball bearing hinges, included

Hardware is where an expensive-looking gate gives itself away, usually inside the first year. So every Portland single is supplied with a set of heavy-duty ball bearing hinges — a genuine step up from the standard hinge, and the right match for a leaf this close-slatted and this heavy. Sealed 180° bearings carry the load instead of grinding against it, rated well beyond the weight of the gate, so it swings smooth and effortless and never drops or drags. Each hinge is fully adjustable on a threaded stem, so the installer can dial the leaf square on the post and fine-tune the latch gap on site — then leave it set. Zinc plated for the weather. Included in the price, not an upsell.

Pair the Portland single gate with the matching Portland fence panels and double gate and the entire frontage reads as one resolved composition — same square sections, same close 10mm spacing below, same open band above, same finish, carried from boundary to driveway to front path.
